Gamescom 2025 has wrapped up, leaving many developers scratching their heads over the perplexing distribution of Nintendo Switch 2 development kits. Reports from Digital Foundry highlight a concerning trend: numerous studios, both indie and AAA, are finding it challenging to secure these coveted kits. It appears that Nintendo's strategy might be intentionally leaning towards discouraging early development for its next-gen console.
“Nintendo seems to be almost discouraging Switch 2 development to some degree," said John. "I’ve spoken with plenty of developers who were told to stick with Switch 1 and rely on backwards compatibility. Many are eager to create for Switch 2 but can’t access the necessary hardware. It’s a tough situation right now.”

“I’m puzzled by the strategy,” Oliver stated. “Developers are still having a hard time obtaining the systems. Months ago, there were rumors of notable developers facing odd exclusions while some indie studios got lucky. For instance, there’s that campfire game which secured kits, but major AAA developers have been left hanging without them.”

The disparity in kit distribution raises questions about Nintendo's priorities and how they plan to support developers aiming to bring their games to the next generation. With so much uncertainty, the gaming community is left eagerly awaiting clarity from Nintendo on its future plans.
