Gearbox is gearing up to revolutionize the first-person shooter landscape with the highly anticipated Borderlands 4. Lead writer Taylor Clark recently shared in an interview that the studio is not just churning out another sequel for the sake of it; they’re igniting the flame of innovation once more. Following the notable advancements in gunplay seen in Borderlands 3, the team aims to elevate movement and exploration in the FPS genre. With an expansive open-world design, the developers are focused on how players traverse and discover their surroundings. Fans will find out if Gearbox hits the mark when Borderlands 4 launches this September.
“Borderlands is almost old enough to drive. It would be strange if it weren’t constantly growing and adapting. And that’s not because we’re trying to meet the market in some cynical way.”
Clark elaborated, “We are a creative team and there are ideas that we want to express through Borderlands 4. There are ways that we want to make it feel like we’re breaking fresh ground again.”
Emphasizing a similar focused approach to the combat upgrade in Borderlands 3, Gearbox is now looking at movement and exploration. Clark stated, “This means less borders, more lands,” along with “virtually no loading times” and a non-linear campaign that allows players to tackle main missions “in pretty much any order.”
