Nintendo's president, Shuntaro Furukawa, has shared some exciting news on X: the recent lottery for the Nintendo Switch 2 at the Japanese My Nintendo Store has attracted an astounding 2.2 million participants! This overwhelming response has far surpassed the company's expectations, indicating that many eager fans will unfortunately miss out on winning one of the coveted consoles.
“On April 2, we unveiled the details of the Nintendo Switch 2 and opened the lottery on the My Nintendo Store, leading to a remarkable number of applicants—around 2.2 million in Japan alone. Sadly, this exceeds our initial estimations, and the quantity of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles available for delivery on June 5 has been greatly outstripped. As a result, it is regrettable that many hopefuls will not emerge victorious when we announce the winners tomorrow, April 24,” Mr. Furukawa explained.
To ease the disappointment for those who don't win in the first lottery, the My Nintendo Store will automatically roll over all non-winning entries into a second round. However, even with the inclusion of additional consoles in the second lottery, we won’t be able to accommodate every application. We sincerely apologize for not being able to fulfill expectations, despite our extensive planning.
We are actively working to bolster our production capabilities to meet this incredible demand. Starting April 24, game stores and online retailers nationwide will sequentially begin taking pre-orders or holding lottery sales for the Nintendo Switch 2 console. The My Nintendo Store will continue selling the console even after its launch date, with further details to follow. With the support of our retail partners, we are committed to delivering as many Nintendo Switch 2 units as possible to our loyal customers.
Looking ahead, we are planning to produce and ship a significant number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles in the months to come. We appreciate your patience as we work to meet your expectations.
